Breastfeeding style: how to build a nursing wardrobe
Now, if you're like me, you will have noticed how dire the situation is when it comes to nursing clothes that are on the market. The two problems I have found are, the colours and shapes are really unflattering, mostly consisting of stripes in monochromatic depressing shades and secondly, they cost an arm and a leg, just because they have a little zip or a flap to pop your booby out discreetly in public. After I gave birth to Olive I have found that all I want to do is wear bright colours and fun prints! So I had to figure out a different way of dressing, that was still practical for breastfeeding, but allowed me to still feel like I could dress to suit how I felt! Feeling good in what you're wearing is not vain. It's an important step to feeling mentally healthy as a new Mum. Even if it's just a pretty coloured top. No wonder ladies feel like they are losing themselves after having a baby when all they are offered in the clothing department is weird sports wear, and glorified pyjamas...
Start with a good base, get yourself a few well fitter maternity bras. If you're going to be breastfeeding for a while, it is worth it! I was given two maternity singlets from H&M which I often wear under clothes like a bra. The singlets are handy because you can wear a loose top over it and when you lift it up to feed, you don't have to expose your stomach, if that is something you find uncomfortable. Another thing you can do the emulate this is put a stretchy, light normal singlet over your bra, so you can easily pull it down to nurse!
A good nursing bra should have little clips you can unhook easily with one hand, and be comfortable!
I have a big collection of cropped t-shirts and sweaters, these are super handy to wear over the nursing singlet or a stretchy singlet and the nursing bra or just the bra! I usually pair them with a high waisted skirt, jeans or shorts. Something I have also started doing is wearing overalls and pinafores with the little buckle/buttons that can be undone when you need to nurse. Pop a cropped top under one of those babies and you can pop a booby out in the super market isle as easily as choosing a good avocado!
I am a huge advocate for shopping second hand, so if you can find things at markets, car boot sales or thrift shops, that's the way to go! And you will feel much better about editing something you've purchased for $5 as apposed to $100. Look for things with zips and buttons down the front, light fabrics and fabrics with stretch! In summer you don't have to worry too much about high necklines on dresses that will stop you from popping a tit, but sometimes if you have a loose dress that you can pull up, you can put a pair of shorts under it so you're not flashing your knickers! And of course, if you are thrift shopping, check out the maternity/ nursing section just in case, because sometimes you CAN find cute things!
This isn't strictly nursing related, but more regaining your confidence after having a baby...if you want to accessorise, DO IT! Wear fun earrings, wear a cute scarf or hat or some amazing shoes! I wear silver metallic shoes with stars cut out of them all the time and I feel bloody amazing! Feeling good in yourself will make you happier and you will be more present to be a better mum for your baby. Never deny yourself little pleasure if that's what you enjoy! On the other hand, if you are happier not doing any of these things, do it, live your best life girl! Wear that tracksuit to the shops! I am here for it! Be comfortable, that is the goal!
And lastly, when it comes to clothes, wear what makes you happy. If you are like me and you have the worlds biggest knockers on quite a normal sized body, I have found that wearing tight pants or skirts with a loose cropped top makes me feel better than just a huge bag shape over my whole body. Also the odd body-con dress is super handy to wear under a jacket or a t-shirt, it looks great while still having the stretch to nurse easily! You don't have to feel frumpy just because you're a mummy! Get out there and get creative!
